About Us

   »   About Us

The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) is dedicated to delivering efficient, high-quality healthcare to residents and visitors of the British Virgin Islands. Guided by our motto, “Only Excellence Counts,” we uphold the highest standards in every aspect of healthcare, ensuring community well-being and productivity.

We are proud to be accredited by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), an internationally recognized organization that upholds rigorous healthcare standards, reflecting our unwavering commitment to excellence. Additionally, our state-of-the-art laboratory is ISO-15189 accredited by Trinidad and Tobago Laboratory Accreditation Service (TTLABS), affirming our dedication to precision, reliability, and quality in diagnostic services.

Rooted in a legacy of exceptional service, BVIHSA oversees both the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital and a network of community clinics throughout the islands. Established in the 1950s as Peebles Hospital, our primary facility has evolved into a modern, 120-bed hospital offering 24-hour accident and emergency services, ambulance services, full maternity and neonatal care, haemodialysis, outpatient pharmacy services, and an array of diagnostic and specialist clinics.

Named after the former Premier and healthcare professional Dr. D. Orlando Smith, the hospital represents our dedication to advancing healthcare in the BVI.

BVIHSA extends access to care through its network of community clinics located on Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada. The Iris O’Neal Clinic on Virgin Gorda, a polyclinic offering 24-hour urgent care, diagnostic services, specialist clinics, and primary care, further enhances our reach. This network ensures accessible and unified healthcare services for all, supporting a healthier, more resilient British Virgin Islands.

As a statutory authority operating under the Ministry of Health and Social Development, BVIHSA also participates in the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme, prioritizing affordability and ease of access to quality care.

Mission, Vision, Values

The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) has its roots in the humble beginnings of the Cottage Hospital, established in 1922 in Road Town, Tortola, by Major H.W. Peebles. For over 100 years, this institution has grown and evolved into a leading organization for healthcare and clinical innovation in the territory.

Today, BVIHSA continues its transformation to meet the ever-changing needs of the community. With a century of dedicated service, the organization takes pride in delivering quality care through the expertise of its staff, who are among the best in their fields. BVIHSA remains committed to building a healthier, stronger British Virgin Islands by offering compassionate service and streamlined healthcare delivery, empowering the community to thrive.
