Primary and Community Health Services is an operational arm of the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA). BVIHSA, is a statutory body of the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Government of the Virgin Islands (U.K). The service provides preventative, curative, ambulatory, public and community health care to the population, through health programs, health education and promotions and disease surveillance.
The clinics consist of disciplines in Mental Health, Dentistry, Audiology, Maternal and Child, Medicine and Prison Health. Care is delivered through twelve (12) health services in nine (9) community health care facilities, distributed over four health districts. Three health districts are located on Tortola and the fourth health district consists of Virgin Gorda and Anegada.
Primary and Community Health, is the aspect of health care that focuses on engaging individuals and the community in preventative health behaviours and health maintenance that secure wellbeing. This includes preventative strategies, such as immunization, family planning, well-maintenance visits, health education, health promotion and chronic disease health programs.
Additionally, this aspect of the health care system, surveys the health needs of the community, observes disease patterns and orchestrates and implements programs that prevent and mitigate the continuous spread and impact of the disease. The department aims to deliver compassionate, comprehensive, culturally relevant, accessible care, that upholds best practice and safety standards. .
