Art Heals Project Transforms D.D.O.S.H With Large-Scale Pieces

British Virgin Islands – April 8, 2026 – The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA), in collaboration with Creative Waves, has officially launched the Art Heals Project, an inspiring initiative that brings together art, community, and corporate support to enhance healing environments through strategic partnerships.

Unveiled on April 02, 2026, in the Lobby of the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital, the exhibition immediately captivated attendees. Towering, mural-sized artworks stretched across the walls, transforming the space into an immersive experience. Guests paused in awe, drawn in by the scale, color, and emotion of each piece, which seemed to turn the hospital lobby into a sanctuary of reflection and calm.

The initiative reflects a key priority in BVIHSA’s 2025–2033 Strategic Plan, leveraging strategic partnerships to support holistic wellbeing and deliver on its guiding principle, “Only Excellence Counts.”

Each artwork represents a powerful collaboration between artist, community organization, and sponsor:

  • Healing Moments by Via Donovan-Hodge – in collaboration with Imagination Academy and sponsor Gold Leaf Consulting – invites calm and renewal through nature-inspired imagery.
  • Calm Resilience by Esau Andrews – in collaboration with The Art Lab and sponsor Caribbean Insurers Ltd. (CIL) – captures quiet strength through the poised presence of a flamingo.
  • Window of Hope by Darryl Bess – in collaboration with BVI Diabetes Association and sponsor House of Luxury – explores connection and compassion through abstract expression.
  • Healing Dream by Walden Benjamin – in collaboration with Lemonade BVI and sponsor BCQS – blends imagination and care in a vibrant, geometric landscape.
  • Serenity in Bloom by Sim Llewellyn – in collaboration with the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) and sponsor Trident Trust – reflects the delicate balance of healing and growth.

Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon. Vincent Wheatley, described the project as a reflection of a broader vision for healthcare: The Minister said, “True healing extends beyond the physical… Today’s unveiling reminds us that innovative, collaborative approaches can transform lives.”

He added that the initiative’s strength lies in “the spirit of collaboration that brought it to life.”

Hon. Lorna Smith, OBE, Junior Minister for Financial Services and Economic Development, commended the energy behind the initiative, noting:

“Sophie, your energy is certainly inspiring.”

On behalf of the hospital, Acting CEO Dr. June Samuel expressed gratitude for the contribution, highlighting its deeper impact: “Your generosity goes beyond the gift of art – it reflects a commitment to healing, compassion, and the human experience in healthcare.”

Founder of Creative Waves, Sophie Stanton, emphasized the vision behind the project: “Art brings warmth into clinical spaces… This is just the beginning of transforming healthcare environments into spaces that support emotional and mental wellbeing.”

The striking, large-scale pieces stand as daily reminders that healing is not only clinical; it is emotional, visual, and deeply human. Through initiatives like Art Heals, BVIHSA continues to demonstrate how strong partnerships can elevate care and inspire excellence across the Virgin Islands.
