Silver Sulfadiazine Cream 1% is a topical antimicrobial agent formulated to prevent and treat wound infections in patients with second- and third-degree burns. The cream contains micronized silver sulfadiazine, which releases silver ions that exert bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as certain yeasts.

Warnings and cautions

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to silver sulfadiazine or any component of the cream
  • Pregnant women near term
  • Premature infants and newborns under 2 months of age ​

Precautions:

  • Use with caution in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function
  • Avoid use in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency due to risk of hemolysis
  • Monitor for signs of systemic absorption, especially when applied to large surface areas
  • Potential side effects include transient leukopenia, skin discoloration, burning sensation, and allergic reactions
How to use

  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
  • This medication is for external skin use only.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes unless specifically directed by your doctor.
  • A healthcare professional will usually clean and remove dead tissue before application.
  • Apply using sterile technique (e.g., wearing sterile gloves and tools).
  • Use as directed by your doctor, typically once or twice daily.
  • Apply a layer about 1–2 mm (1/16 inch) thick over the wound.
  • Ensure the wound is always covered with cream.
  • Dressings may be applied, but only if needed.
  • If the cream rubs off, reapply immediately.
  • Reapply after hydrotherapy or wound cleaning.
  • Continue treatment until the wound is healed or ready for skin grafting.
  • Use it regularly at the same time(s) each day for best results.
  • Inform your doctor if the condition persists or worsens.
