Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands – September 27, 2026 - The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) is providing a further update on the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic on Virgin Gorda following the completion of the independent environmental assessment and receipt of the laboratory findings.

The assessment identified the presence of mold within the building. In light of these findings, and based on recommendations arising from the assessment, additional work is required before the facility can be cleared for use. As a result, the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic will remain closed until further notice.

BVIHSA emphasizes that the findings are being addressed through a planned remediation process designed to ensure that the facility is suitable for occupancy before services return to the building. The Authority is working with the relevant technical professionals to implement the recommended measures.

The next phase of work will include rebalancing the air-conditioning system, as well as industrial remediation cleaning of the ductwork and all areas of the facility. Following completion of these works, a second environmental assessment will be conducted to verify that the remediation has been effective and to determine whether the facility is fit for occupancy.

The roof project is also continuing as a priority. Professional Roofing has been engaged to undertake the works under the management of the Ministry of Health, and this work will proceed alongside the other necessary facility improvements.

BVIHSA recognizes the importance of the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic to healthcare delivery on Virgin Gorda and understands the impact that the extended closure may have on patients, staff and the wider community. The Authority is therefore taking a careful and measured approach to the necessary works, with the safety and wellbeing of patients and staff remaining the priority.

BVIHSA will continue to monitor the progress of the remediation and associated facility works and will provide further updates as significant milestones are reached, including following the second environmental assessment.
