BVI Health Services Authority Health Advisory- Smoke from Virgin Gorda Dumpsite Fire
The BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) is advising residents and visitors in Virgin Gorda to take precautions due to smoke being generated by the ongoing fire at the Virgin Gorda Dumpsite.
Smoke from burning waste can contain fine airborne particles and other potentially harmful substances that may irritate the eyes, nose and throat and can worsen existing respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. Exposure may be particularly concerning for vulnerable individuals.
Persons at increased risk include:
Individuals with asthma, COPD or other chronic respiratory conditions
Persons with heart or other cardiovascular conditions
Infants and young children
Older adults
Persons who are pregnant or otherwise particularly sensitive to air pollution
Reduce Your Exposure
Residents and visitors in areas affected by smoke are advised to:
Stay indoors when smoke is present and avoid unnecessary exposure.
Keep windows and doors closed while smoke is affecting the area.
If using air conditioning, close the fresh-air intake and use the recirculation setting, where available.
Avoid outdoor exercise and strenuous physical activity while smoke levels are elevated, as increased breathing can increase the amount of smoke inhaled.
If it is necessary to go outdoors in smoky conditions, wear a well-fitting N95 or KN95 respirator, where available. Surgical and cloth masks do not provide the same level of protection against fine smoke particles.
Keep children, older adults and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions away from areas where smoke is concentrated.
Monitor for Symptoms
Smoke exposure may cause coughing, throat or eye irritation, wheezing, shortness of breath, headache, dizziness or nausea. Individuals with asthma, COPD or heart conditions may experience worsening of their symptoms.
Seek medical attention promptly if you experience difficulty breathing, persistent or severe coughing, chest discomfort, significant dizziness, or worsening of an existing respiratory or cardiovascular condition.
For medical advice or assistance, contact our Medical Centre at 440-1661.
For a medical emergency requiring an ambulance, call 119.
Residents should continue to follow updates and instructions from the relevant authorities as the situation develops.
The BVIHSA encourages everyone in affected areas to take sensible precautions to reduce exposure to smoke and protect their health.
