The BVI Health Services Authority’s Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services plays a pivotal role in supporting individuals facing mental health challenges. Under the leadership of Dr. Virginia Rubaine, our psychologist, the service focuses on providing comprehensive mental health assessments, therapeutic interventions, and counseling to individuals of all ages. Dr. Rubaine brings a wealth of experience and expertise, using evidence-based approaches to treat a variety of psychological conditions, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress-related disorders, among others.
The psychiatric services are designed to offer comprehensive care to individuals dealing with a wide range of mental health conditions. These services, led by our experienced Community Psychiatrist and mental health professionals, focus on both the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders, with the goal of improving the overall well-being of patients through holistic strategies.
Psychiatric services include thorough mental health assessments, where individuals are evaluated in order to understand the nature of their condition and develop a personalized treatment plan. This can involve detailed evaluations for mood disorders, anxiety, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders. Based on these assessments, medication management may be utilized. The Community Psychiatrist prescribes and monitors the efficacy of medications that may help patients manage their symptoms, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, or mood stabilizers.
The Unit’s approach to holistic care is inclusive of psychotherapy services, which may include individual counseling or group therapy sessions. These therapeutic interventions help individuals understand their mental health challenges, develop coping mechanisms, and address any underlying psychological issues. Crisis intervention is another vital service offered; immediate care and support are provided during periods of acute mental distress or psychiatric emergencies.
Our psychiatrist works closely with our psychologist, social workers, mental health officers, occupational therapist assistant, and substance abuse counselor to provide a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to care. This ensures that all aspects of a patient’s mental health and well-being are addressed, including psychological, social, and medical needs. Overall, the psychiatric services at the BVI Health Services Authority aim to support individuals in managing their mental health, improving their quality of life, and fostering long-term recovery and resilience.
