Maternity Service

The BVI Health Services Authority provides comprehensive maternity care services to expectant mothers in the British Virgin Islands. These services include prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care for both mother and baby.

Prenatal care includes regular check-ups with an obstetrician, ultrasound exams to monitor the baby’s growth and development, and screenings for any potential complications. The BVI Health Services Authority also provides childbirth education classes to help expectant mothers prepare for labour and delivery.

Labour and delivery services are provided at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital in Road Town, Tortola, where expectant mothers are supported by a team of experienced obstetricians, midwives, and nurses. The hospital has a state-of-the-art labour and delivery unit with private rooms and a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for babies who need specialized medical attention.

After delivery, new mothers receive postpartum care to ensure they are recovering well and to monitor the health of the new-born. Breastfeeding support and guidance is also available, as well as postpartum depression screening and counselling services.
