About Dr. Blidgen

Dr. Joseph Lloyd Blidgen is a highly trained cardiothoracic surgeon with a career dedicated to advancing surgical care across the Caribbean. He completed his medical degree at the University of the West Indies, Mona in 1995, followed by a residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery and a fellowship in Cardiac Surgery at Dalhousie University in Canada (2003–2005). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Dr. Blidgen’s clinical expertise spans cardiac, congenital, and general thoracic surgery. His areas of special interest include aortic root surgery, mitral and aortic valve repair and replacement, myocardial protection, chest trauma, and critical care. He serves patients across several institutions including the University Hospital of the West Indies, National Chest Hospital, and Bustamante Hospital for Children.

Beyond the operating room, Dr. Blidgen is passionate about the politics of cardiothoracic surgery in developing countries and continues to advocate for equitable access to advanced surgical care. In his free time, he enjoys football, cricket, sightseeing, and engaging in discourse on global health systems.
