About Prof. Reid

Prof. Marvin Reid is the Director of the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit (TMRU) and Associate Lecturer in the Department of Community Medicine & Psychiatry at The University of the West Indies, Mona. With a career spanning clinical practice, research, and academic leadership, Prof. Reid is renowned for his contributions to nutrition and chronic disease prevention in the Caribbean. He previously led Jamaica’s Sickle Cell Programme (2004–2014) and was instrumental in implementing stroke screening in children with sickle cell disease.

As a lecturer, he teaches nutrition and family medicine to a wide range of health professionals and serves on the specialty boards for both disciplines, contributing to curriculum development and academic standards. His current research focuses on evaluating interventions to reduce cardiovascular disease risk at both individual and community levels.

In his role as North America Region President of WONCA, Prof. Reid aims to strengthen regional collaboration and advocate for equitable, accessible, and high-quality primary care globally. Outside of work, he is an avid sports enthusiast, a passionate cook, and a committed community volunteer through Rotary.
