May is Mental Health Awareness Month and this year’s theme is “Where there is help, there is hope!” The Incredible Race was one of this year’s highlights as it was a special teen edition competition which yielded seven teams.
The Incredible Race is an event loosely based on the Emmy Award winning CBS hit, ‘The Amazing Race’, which is a competition with teams of four people who have a pre-existing personal relationship. Participants are expected to foster relationships that support each other during the competition’s physical and mental challenges.
According to the Director of Community Mental Health Services, Dr. Virginia Rubaine, “We decided to make this year’s competition a teen edition for several reasons. We are finding that our young people are having challenges dealing with day-to-day stressors and this is having a strong impact on their lives and in our society.”
She added “The competition builds support through team based activities, reinforces unity, promotes critical thinking and provides a fun filled opportunity for young people to be mentally, physically and emotionally challenged in a safe and controlled manner.”
In addition to the Incredible Race, the Community Mental Health Services also held its Family Fun Day at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park and held activities geared towards educating the public and heighten awareness of the importance of good mental health.
The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority and the Community Mental Health Services extends a heartfelt thank you for all of the generous contributions from the corporate community and volunteers who were instrumental in making the Incredible and the Family Fun Day a success.
