This is the microscopic examination of cells and is used to aid in the diagnosis of cancer, certain infectious diseases and other inflammatory conditions. A common application of cytopathology is the Pap smear, which is used as a screening tool to detect precancerous cervical lesions and prevent cervical cancer. Cytopathology is also commonly used to investigate thyroid lesions, diseases involving sterile body cavities (peritoneal, pleural, and cerebrospinal), and a wide range of other body sites.

Autopsy Pathology

An autopsy—also known as a post-mortem examination is a highly specialized surgical procedure that consists of a thorough examination of a corpse to determine the cause and manner of death and to evaluate any disease or injury that may be present. Specialized medical doctor called a Pathologist performs autopsies.

Autopsies are performed for either legal or medical purposes. For example, a forensic autopsy is carried out when the cause of death may be a criminal matter, while a clinical or academic autopsy is performed to find the medical cause of death and is used in case of unknown or uncertain death.

Specifically, in clinical medicine, it refers to the examination of tissue (biopsy or surgical specimen) to study the manifestations of disease. This is an important tool in anatomical pathology, since accurate diagnosis of cancer and other diseases usually requires histopathological examination of samples. Trained medical doctors called Pathologists, are the personnel who perform histopathological examination and provide diagnostic information based on their observations.
