Thursday, May 1 – The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) Community Mental Health Centre will celebrate May as Mental Health Awareness Month under the theme: “Mind Your Health”.
According the Chief of Medical Staff Dr. June Samuel, “This year we want the community to understand that some non-communicable diseases, like hypertension or high blood pressure brought on by the inability to deal with the daily stress of life, is affecting Virgin Islanders mental state as well as their physical state.”
Dr. Samuel added persons need to understand that their mental health is supported or negatively affected by their physical health and physical health is supported or negatively affected by their mental health.
She stated that the two go hand-in-hand and one main topic for the education sessions for this month is to bring more awareness of the relationship between mental and physical wellbeing.
According to the Community Mental Health Centre, a healthy lifestyle can help to prevent the onset or worsening of depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions, as well as heart disease, diabetes, obesity and other chronic health problems. Additionally a healthy lifestyle can also help persons recover from these conditions.
For the entire month of May the Community Mental Health Centre will have a variety of activities, educational sessions, community and media appearances aimed at raising awareness on the role mental health plays in each persons’ life and will provide tips and resources to assist individuals towards promoting good mental health.
