The British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) has partnered with the British Virgin Islands HIV/AIDS Foundation to provide additional services and support to the HIV/AIDS community in the Territory.
On Monday, 1st December in the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park the BVIHSA and the BVI HIV/AIDS Foundation will celebrate World AIDS Day with a series of activities. Starting from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm persons can obtain a free confidential five minute HIV/AIDS test, collect condoms, ribbons and information on HIV/AIDS. Additionally, a team from the BVI HIV/AIDS Foundation and the BVIHSA will distribute information and small giveaways in the Road Town area.
According to the President of the BVI HIV/AIDS Foundation Cid Nava, “We want the Virgin Islands HIV/AIDS community to know that they are not alone and this disease does not mean the end of their life. Many people feel alone because of the lack of support. This partnership with the BVIHSA is to ensure that persons in the community have access to the support they need to live healthy happy lives.”
The BVIHSA Chief Executive Officer Mrs. Darlene Carty Baptiste added, the BVIHSA is committed to serving all the needs of the community and we are very aware of the sensitivity needed to effectively serve the HIV/AIDS community. As the largest health care provider in the Virgin Islands this partnership is critical to meeting the medical needs of the HIV/AIDS community.”
The theme for the month of December is ‘Know Your Status’, and the BVI HIV/AIDS Foundation’s aim is to fight the stigma surrounding the disease and to heighten awareness and healthy life choices. The BVI HIV/AIDS Foundation will make presentations in schools, rotary clubs, business offices and guest appearances on local radio programmes.
The mission of the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority is to deliver excellent, compassionate, client-centered health care and this partnership with the BVI HIV/AIDS Foundation is geared towards improving all services offered to the community.
